You’re invited. Windows Insiders meetups are back

8 April 2026 om 19:00
Hi Insiders, It’s Marcus. I lead Design and Research across Windows & Devices, everything from Windows and Windows Cloud to user experience research, and the industrial design behind Surface and Xbox. What I love most about this role is the end‑to‑end perspective it gives me. I get to see Windows as a complete experience, from the software and shell to the hardware, and ultimately to how it shows up in your lives and how it makes you feel. That’s exactly why I was excited to take on an expanded role with the Windows Insider Program: to listen more closely, engage more directly, and continue improving Windows for over 1 billion people. Throughout my career, the best products have come from a real connection with the community where both sides want to build something we're proud of. That’s the relationship we want with our Insider community. Over the past few months, I’ve had the chance to meet with many of you to hear firsthand how we can improve the Windows Insider Program. We’ve taken that feedback seriously, and there’s a lot already underway. I’m excited about giving you more of a voice with more access to the people building Windows. [caption id="attachment_178853" align="alignnone" width="1024"]Image of Marcus Ash talking with Windows Insiders A photo taken during our Seattle Insiders meetup[/caption] Last month, we took our first step by hosting an Insider meetup in Seattle. It was an opportunity to connect the community directly with members of the Windows product team, get hands‑on with new experiences, share what’s working well, and be candid about what we can do better. Now, we’re taking that experience on the road, bringing it to five more cities over the next few months. At each stop, I’ll be there alongside members of the Insider team and our Windows product makers, sharing where the Windows Insider Program is headed and, just as importantly, listening to how we can keep making it better for you. Our first stops include New York, Hyderabad, Taipei, San Francisco, and London, with more to come.
  • April 21 – New York City (USA)
  • May 7 – Hyderabad (India)
  • May 13 – Taipei (Taiwan)
  • June 4 – San Francisco (USA)
  • June 23 – London (UK)
If you’re interested in connecting and getting a preview of some of the work happening across the commitments Pavan shared last month, I’d love for you to come say hello. You can register your interest today here. We are taking action on your feedback to improve the Insider Program, from clearer channels to more control over the features you care about, and more. We are excited to share more details about these changes later this week. I hope to meet many more of you in the coming months at our various events. Keep the feedback coming. β€” Marcus

Faster, More Helpful, and More Yours

6 April 2026 om 02:00

AppCenter

The latest version of AppCenter comes with some more improvements to the updates view including now showing all ongoing app installations, upgrades, and removals. Plus the β€œLast checked” information is now always shown in the β€œUp to Date” apps header. And we fixed an issue where in-app notifications were sent for every update installed.

AppCenter Updates

AppCenter now shows ongoing operations in the updates view

There’s also some more performance improvements including much faster startup times, faster info fetching for apps that can be installed from multiple stores, and quite a bit of code simplification and cleanup, thanks to Leonhard.

Code

The latest version of Code comes with a number of fixes and a couple new tricks. In the Project’s sidebar, sorting project folders is now a toggle-able setting rather than a one-time action, the Terminal pane now follows the currently selected project’s path, and Jeremy fixed an issue that could cause the number of results for a global search to be incorrect. Plus, Loric fixed an issue that could cause a crash on startup or during certain global searches, and added a new setting to disable syntax highlighting for a more distraction-free editing experience. The High Contrast style has improved contrast for line numbers, thanks to the help of Micah. And it’s no longer possible to open multiple PasteBin dialogs thanks to Calle.

Onboarding & System Settings

We recently removed System Settings as a default dock itemβ€”since it’s accessible from several other places and dock space is at a premiumβ€”but, there were some expressed concerns about discoverability. So we’ve added some additional information to the final page of Onboarding to close the gap. This page shows even after selecting β€œSkip All”, so folks are always shown how to access additional System Settings and set up their computer how they like it.

Onboarding to System Settings

Onboarding now explains ways to access System Settings

We now also support a new accent color option thanks to Ryo: the smooth and creamy β€œLatte”. This is a great new option for big fans of soft neutrals and can be selected both during Onboarding and from Desktop Settings. And, Desktop settings now supports long-press secondary-click on touch screens for removing wallpapers.

Font settings have also been expanded to allow an open-ended selection. So whether you need a font like OpenDyslexic for accessibility reasons, feel more productive with a coding font like Fira, or just want to have a bit of fun, you now have to option to customize text to your liking.

Text settings Font dialog

Text settings now includes an open ended font selection dialog

In keyboard settings, Ryo also addressed an issue that would cause IBus to send a notification in Secure sessions, and Leo added support for using the β€œTools” key present on some keyboards in custom keyboard shortcuts.

Window Manager

And of course we’ve got some more window manager improvements including performance improvements while zooming and a fix for an issue that would cause workspaces to change during pinch gestures by Leo. And Leonhard fixed issues with fullscreen Firefox videos, flickering when the Reduce Motion setting was enabled, and an issue where the correct window for apps with multiple windows would sometimes not be focused when selected from the Dock.

Get These Updates

As always, pop open System Settings β†’ System on elementary OS 8 and hit β€œUpdate All” to get these updates plus your regular security, bug fix, and translation updates. Or set up automatic updates and get a notification when updates are ready to install!

Early Access

Quite a lot has been happening lately to prepare for OS 9 but I think it deserves its own blog post, so hang tight! For now, I’ll say that we’re getting close to a place where we might have bootable daily builds and we’re making good progress on some big projects like a new design for Portals, improved CJK input support and a new on-screen keyboard, a GTK4 powered panel, our next-generation app framework and visual design and more!

Sponsors

At the moment we’re at 20% of our monthly funding goal and 287 Sponsors on GitHub! Shoutouts to everyone helping us reach our goals here. Your monthly sponsorship funds development and makes sure we have the resources we need to give you the best version of elementary OS we can!

Monthly release candidate builds and daily Early Access builds are available to GitHub Sponsors from any tier! Beware that Early Access builds are not considered stable and you will encounter fresh issues when you run them. We’d really appreciate reporting any problems you encounter with the Feedback app or directly on GitHub.

OpenSubtitles download error 406

Subtitle downloads from OpenSubtitles may fail depending on time of day. This is due to our daily download quota being exceeded. Current amount of donations is barely enough to pay for the existing quota. So it is unlikely that quota can be increased and situation will get worse over time.
If you create an OpenSubtitles account and configure it in MPC-HC settings then you may be able to bypass the quota.
Options > Subtitles > Misc > Right-click on OpenSubtitles.com > Setup > Fill in username/password

Overview of features

A lot of people seem to be unaware of some of the awesome features that have been added to MPC-HC in the past years. Here is a list of useful options and features that everyone should know about:

  • Play HDR video
This requires using either MPC Video Renderer (MPCVR) or madVR.
These renderers can be selected here:
    Options > Playback > Output
With other video renderers, the colors will be wrong!
MPCVR is now included and is the recommended renderer for modern systems. MadVR needs to be installed separately. MPCVR also supports Dolby Vision. MadVR does not.
For optimal performance you should change the hardware decoder to D3D11 in LAV Video Decoder settings when using MPCVR on Windows 10/11, because this renderer uses DirectX11.
(Automatic detection of GPU and configuration of the above settings is high on my ToDo list, so MPC-HC will have better default out-of-the-box settings on modern systems in the future.)
  • The installer of MPC-HC is very basic (and that will not change).
I therefore recommend using K-Lite Codec Pack. That includes MPC-HC and other essential components. It has a very advanced installation that can automatically create file associations, and helps you with easy configuration of important MPC-HC settings, such as preferred subtitle language. It also does automatic configuration of renderer and hardware decoding, for best performance and HDR support.
The Standard version should be sufficient for most people. Use Full version of you like to use MadVR.
  • Modern GUI Theme (Dark or Light) or the old classic theme
Options > Player > User Interface
It is also possible to change the height of the seekbar and size of the toolbar buttons.
Plus there are options to show audio/video details in the statusbar, such as codec and resolution.
  • Customizable toolbar buttons
You can add/remove/re-order the player buttons.
There are also several different toolbar designs to choose from.
  • Video preview on the seekbar
Options > Player > User Interface > Hover type
  • Ability to search for subtitles
    Press D for manual search.
Or enable automatic search in: Options > Subtitles > Misc
  • Adjust playback speed
Menu > Play > Playback rate
The buttons in the player that control playback rate take a 2x step by default. This can be customized to smaller values (like 10%):
Options > Playback > Speed step
Adjusting playback speed works best with the internal audio renderer. This also has automatic pitch correction.
Options > Playback > Output > Audio Renderer
  • MPC-HC can remember recently played files and also their playback position, so you can resume playback from when you left
    Options > Player > History
  • You can quickly seek through a video with Ctrl + Mouse Scrollwheel.
  • You can jump to next/previous file in a folder by pressing PageUp/PageDown.
  • You can right-click on the framestep button to step backwards. Some other buttons also have right-click actions, such as closing file by right-clicking stop.
  • You can perform automatic actions at end of file. For example to go to next file or close player.
Options > Playback > After Playback (permanent setting)
Menu > Play > After Playback (for current file only)
  • A-B repeat
You can loop a segment of a video. Press [ and ] to set start and stop markers.
  • You can rotate/flip/mirror/stretch/zoom the video
    Menu > View > Pan&Scan
This is also easily done with hotkeys (see below).
  • There are lots of keyboard hotkeys and mouse actions to control the player. They can be customized as well.
    Options > Player > Keys
Tip: there is a search box above the table.
  • You can seek inside the playlist by simply typing text (when playlist window has the mouse focus).
  • MPC-HC also supports Blu-ray playback.
Only limitation is that you need to use a decrypting tool.
And it also does not support Blu-ray menus, but you can use the navigate menu in the player to select the content to play.
  • You can stream videos directly from Youtube and many other video websites
Put yt-dlp.exe in the MPC-HC installation folder.
Then you can open website URLs in the player: Menu > File > Open File/URL
You can even download those videos: Menu > File > Save a copy
Tip: to be able to download in best quality with yt-dlp, it is recommended to also put ffmpeg.exe in the MPC-HC folder.
Several YDL configuration options are found here: Options > Advanced
This includes an option to specify the location of yt-dlp.exe in case you don't want to put it in MPC-HC folder.
Note 1: You also need to install Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 SP1 Redistributable Package (x86)
Note 2: For optimal Youtube support you may also need to put deno.exe in same folder as yt-dlp.
Note 3: yt-dlp nightly build (very latest version made daily)
    Note 4: yt-dlp windows7 compatible build
  • Besides all these (new) features, there have also been many bugfixes and internal improvements in the player in the past years that give better performance and stability. It also has updated internal codecs. Support was added for CUE sheets, WebVTT subtitles, etc.
  • You should really take a few minutes to look through all the options pages if you are a new user or if you are upgrading from a very old version. Don't forget the advanced options page.

res_cdrel_custom: do not free config when no new config was loaded

Author: nappsoft
Date: 2026-04-02

When the res_cdrel_custom modules is reloaded and the config has not been changed asterisk should not free the old config. Otherwise the connection to the database will be closed and no new connection will be opened.

Resolves: #1852

res_cdrel_custom: Resolve several formatting issues.

Author: George Joseph
Date: 2026-03-31

Several issues are resolved:

  • Internally, floats were used for timestamp values but this could result
in wrapping so they've been changed to doubles.

  • Historically, the default CEL eventtime format is <seconds>.<microseconds>
with <microseconds> always being 6 digits. This should have continued to be
the case but res_cdrel_custom wasn't checking the dateformat setting in
cel.conf and was defaulting to %F %T. res_cdrel_custom now gets the default
date format from cel.conf, which will be whatever the dateformat parameter
is set to or <seconds>.<microseconds> if not set.

  • The timeval field formatter for both CDR and CEL wasn't handling custom
strftime format strings correctly. This is now fixed so you should be able
to specifiy custom strftime format strings for the CEL eventtime and CDR
start, answer and end fields. For example: eventtime(%FT%T%z).
