August 22nd, 2025, FFmpeg 8.0 "Huffman"

23 Augustus 2025 om 08:26

A new major release, FFmpeg 8.0 "Huffman", is now available for download. Thanks to several delays, and modernization of our entire infrastructure, this release ended up being one of our largest releases to date. In short, its new features are:

  • Native decoders: APV, ProRes RAW, RealVideo 6.0, Sanyo LD-ADPCM, G.728
  • VVC decoder improvements: IBC, ACT, Palette Mode
  • Vulkan compute-based codecs: FFv1 (encode and decode), ProRes RAW (decode only)
  • Hardware accelerated decoding: Vulkan VP9, VAAPI VVC, OpenHarmony H264/5
  • Hardware accelerated encoding: Vulkan AV1, OpenHarmony H264/5
  • Formats: MCC, G.728, Whip, APV
  • Filters: colordetect, pad_cuda, scale_d3d11, Whisper, and others

A new class of decoders and encoders based on pure Vulkan compute implementation have been added. Vulkan is a cross-platform, open standard set of APIs that allows programs to use GPU hardware in various ways, from drawing on screen, to doing calculations, to decoding video via custom hardware accelerators. Rather than using a custom hardware accelerator present, these codecs are based on compute shaders, and work on any implementation of Vulkan 1.3.
Decoders use the same hwaccel API and commands, so users do not need to do anything special to enable them, as enabling Vulkan decoding is sufficient to use them.
Encoders, like our hardware accelerated encoders, require specifying a new encoder (ffv1_vulkan). Currently, the only codecs supported are: FFv1 (encoding and decoding) and ProRes RAW (decode only). ProRes (encode+decode) and VC-2 (encode+decode) implementations are complete and currently in review, to be merged soon and available with the next minor release.
Only codecs specifically designed for parallelized decoding can be implemented in such a way, with more mainstream codecs not being planned for support.
Depending on the hardware, these new codecs can provide very significant speedups, and open up possibilities to work with them for situations like non-linear video editors and lossless screen recording/streaming, so we are excited to learn what our downstream users can make with them.

The project has recently started to modernize its infrastructure. Our mailing list servers have been fully upgraded, and we have recently started to accept contributions via a new forge, available on code.ffmpeg.org, running a Forgejo instance.

As usual, we recommend that users, distributors, and system integrators to upgrade unless they use current git master.

AirGradient joins Works with Home Assistant

21 Augustus 2025 om 02:00
AirGradient joins Works with Home Assistant

Weโ€™re excited to announce that AirGradient is the latest manufacturer to join the fast-growing Works With Home Assistant program! They bring their air quality monitors to the program, with both indoor and outdoor models.

AirGradient is the first partner in the program focused on building advanced indoor and outdoor air quality monitors. They are also well known within our community for their powerful tech, and for their focus on open source and dedication to local air quality projects around the world.

A breath of fresh air

AirGradient is the first partner to join that operates out of Thailand, and they initially started making their air monitors to help their local community. They actively support air quality improvement projects both in Thailand itself, but also globally. AirGradient donates monitors and has partnered with a variety of different organisations and NGOs, including UNICEF. These monitors are often placed in schools, helping young people to better understand and work to protect their air quality.

Community is central to our work with AirGradient. Their hardware and software are open source, just like our own. Plus, theyโ€™ve taken an active role in integrating into Home Assistant, bringing their local Wi-Fi integration up to not just the gold, but the platinum tier on our integration quality scale. Like all of our Works With partners, the devices work completely locally with no need for a cloud connection. Whatโ€™s more, they really embrace the DIY aspect of the smart home, with their devices available fully assembled or as a build-it-yourself kit!

AirGradientโ€™s open approach even extends to the data collected by their community of users. Whilst completely optional, users can share their air quality readings with the world (which they visualize into an amazing map). This helpful air quality map grows every time a user opts to share their data, and is a fantastic open resource for climate researchers, students, or anyone concerned about air quality in their local area. If your area is a blank spot on this map, that is all the more reason to buy an AirGradient outdoor monitor.

An online AirGradient air quality map

Each kit comes with a screwdriver and is designed for easy repair. Broken sensor? Swap it out. Firmware update needed? Flash it yourself. Sustainability is one of the core guiding principles of the Open Home Foundation, and we love that repairability is built in. AirGradient also donates at least 1% of annual sales to non-profits and community direct donations. In fact, they asked us to include in this blog an open invitation to our community: If you have a local project that you think would benefit from open source air quality monitors, get in touch through this link.

"We're excited to join the Works With Home Assistant program because it aligns perfectly with our open-source philosophy. Home Assistant represents the same values we believe in - local control, privacy, and community-driven innovation. Together, we're proving that open systems don't just work better for users, they create better outcomes for the planet."

- Achim Haug, Founder and CEO of AirGradient

Certified Devices

In case youโ€™re new to Works With Home Assistant, unlike some certification programs, itโ€™s not just a badge. We rigorously test items in-house and provide feedback to the manufacturers to ensure that products work easily out of the box and provide a seamless experience. The Works With program is operated by the Open Home Foundation and funded by the support of Home Assistant Cloud Subscribers.

AirGradient has certified the following devices with us:ย ย

An AirGradient One sitting on a kitchen counterFinally, a metric to show precisely how badly you burned your dinner

When we talk about sustainability in relation to the smart home, itโ€™s easy to focus on energy management and reducing our carbon impact. However, with AirGradient, you can deep dive into the impacts of the release of CO2 and other air pollutants, better understanding what you, your family, and friends breathe in every day. With an in-house science team of atmospheric chemists and public health experts, they ensure that the monitors are accurate and each of the fully assembled monitors are tested in a dedicated test chamber.

Whether you want to see if your new furniture is putting dangerous VOCs into the air, or if a smelly candle is going to aggravate any allergies, the use cases are endless. The AirGradient One also has a built-in display with both detailed data and a set of LEDs to show general air quality at a glance. Both devices measure carbon dioxide, VOCs, nitrogen oxides, particulate matter, temperature, and humidity. AirGradient also provides helpful documentation on their website that helps you understand these measurements and the impact they can have on your household.

These devices can not only give you in-depth information about the air in and out of your home, but they can also unlock powerful automations. We often see these devices paired with door or window open/close sensors, air purifiers, dehumidifiers, or air conditioners to reduce particulates in the home from pets or carpets.

Clearing the air

Weโ€™re so excited to be partnered with AirGradient. Their mission is important, and their open and sustainable approach is precisely what we love to see. Partnerships like this are only possible with the support of Home Assistant Cloud subscribers. Many of us at the Open Home Foundation have picked up AirGradient monitors and are sharing our air quality data today, and weโ€™d love for you to join us on the map!

FAQs

Q: If I have a device that is not listed under Works With Home Assistant, does this mean itโ€™s not supported?

A: No! It just means that it hasnโ€™t gone through a testing schedule with our team or doesnโ€™t fit the requirements of the program. It might function perfectly well, but be added to the testing schedule later down the road, or it might work under a different connectivity type that we donโ€™t currently test under the program.

Q: Ok, so whatโ€™s the point of the Works With program?

A: It highlights the devices we know work well with Home Assistant and the brands that make a long-term commitment to keeping support for these devices going. The certification agreement specifies that the devices must have full functionality within Home Assistant, operate locally without the need for cloud and will continue to do so long-term.

Q: How were these devices tested?

A: All devices in this list were tested using a standard HA Green Hub with the local AirGradient integration and a Wi-Fi network. HA will automatically discover them after they join your network (following the deviceโ€™s instructions to add it to the WiFi). If you have another setup, thatโ€™s not a problem, but we test against these as they are the most effective way for our team to certify within our ecosystem.

Q: Will you be adding more AirGradient devices to the program?

A: Why not! Weโ€™re thrilled to foster a close relationship with the team at AirGradient to work together on any upcoming releases or add in further products that are not yet listed here.

Firefox 142.0

28 Augustus 2025 om 18:52

New

  • For users in the United States, article recommendations on your New Tab page are now grouped into topic sections like Sports, Food, and Entertainment to make stories more organized and easier to scan. You can also follow topics youโ€™re interested in and block ones youโ€™d prefer not to see, giving you more control over what shows up when you open a new tab.

This feature is part of a progressive roll out.

What is a progressive roll out?

Certain new Firefox features are released gradually. This means some users will see the feature before everyone does. This approach helps to get early feedback to catch bugs and improve behavior quickly, meaning more Firefox users overall have a better experience.

  • You can now see whatโ€™s behind a link before visiting it with Link Previews. Long press a link (or right-click and choose Preview Link). Previews can optionally include AI-generated key points, which are processed on your device to protect your privacy.

Link Previews is gradually rolling out to ensure performance and quality and is now available in en-US, en-CA, en-GB, en-AU for users with more than 3 GB of available RAM.

  • On Windows, clicking a persistent notification when Firefox is closed or restarted will now properly open Firefox with the relevant webpage, instead of just opening the main page of the website.

  • ETP Strict mode now supports a flexible exception list to fix broken site features caused by tracker blocking. Exceptions are split into baseline (core functionality) and convenience (extra features), letting users choose improved site compatibility without compromising key privacy protections.

  • Keep an active tab visible in a collapsed tab group
Focus on just one tab in a group without the clutter. Your active tab stays in view, keeping things tidy even with the group collapsed.

  • You can now remove extensions from the sidebar by right-clicking the extension icon and selecting Remove from Sidebar.

Fixed

  • Improved the scroll speed in the bookmarks dialog to not go beyond the component area.

  • Improved drag-and-drop support for blob images.

  • Various security fixes.

Changed

  • Improved search results from browsing history via the address bar, reducing the likelihood of duplicate results being shown.

  • Improved Netmonitor so that Request Headers/Cookies/Params are displayed in the Network panel even if the request isn't finished yet.

Enterprise

Developer

  • Firefox now supports the wllama API for extensions, enabling developers to integrate local language model (LLM) capabilities directly into their add-ons.

  • The Debugger now offers a new setting to control whether the debugger overlay is shown during paused script execution.

    image for debugger

  • Firefox now supports the Prioritized Task Scheduling API, enabling developers to assign and manage task priorities.

  • The Selection.getComposedRanges() API is now available, allowing developers to accurately get selected text ranges across shadow DOM boundaries.

  • Added support for the URLPattern API, enabling developers to match and parse URLs using a standardized pattern syntax.

Unresolved

  • Multiselecting non-contiguous tabs to drag may result in toolbar unresponsiveness or visual glitches. Dragging any single tab should resolve this. We will be landing a fix in the next dot release with Bug 1984342.
