What’s new in Proxmox Mail Gateway 8.2
Single sign-on: This version simplifies access management by integrating support for multiple authentication realms in the backend login. This eliminates the need to manage specific authentication details, enabling administrators to log into Proxmox Mail Gateway using single sign-on (SSO) authentication schemes with the new OpenID Connect as the first supported authentication protocol. This enables logging in through public as well as self-hosted services like Keycloak, Zitadel or LemonLDAP::NG.
Enhanced rule system: The Proxmox development team adds further improvements to the configuration options of the comprehensive object-oriented rule system, by which the mail flow can be controlled and filtered. The filtering of the mail's content by Content-Type can now be configured to ignore information from the filename and the Content-Type header field, and to rely solely on file signature based detection, allowing for accurate filtering of attachments. Furthermore, the filtering of mail header fields can now be restricted to the top header section, thereby providing the option to exclude headers in attached emails from the filter.
DKIM signature for emails generated by Proxmox Mail Gateway: Users can now set the From-header for emails generated by Proxmox Mail Gateway, like for example for notifications from the rule system, admin reports, or backup notifications. These emails are signed with DKIM if the installation uses the header information to obtain the domain for signing.
Automated and unattended installation: Proxmox Mail Gateway now supports automated and unattended installation making large deployments significantly easier. Proxmox offers a ‘proxmox-auto-install-assistant’ tool that fully automates the setup process on bare-metal. Automated installation allows for the rapid deployment of Proxmox Mail Gateway hosts without the need for manual access to the systems, saving time and reducing the risk of errors. To use this method, an answer file must be prepared with the necessary configuration settings for the installation process. This file can be provided directly in the ISO, on an additional disk such as a USB flash drive, or over the network. What is Proxmox Datacenter Manager?
Proxmox Datacenter Manager is an open-source server management software and designed to provide a unified overview of all nodes and clusters that Proxmox VE users have in their virtualized environments. By providing a modern user interface, the first Alpha version enables users to connect to the relevant nodes and/or clusters from a single location, thereby facilitating the management of servers and streamlining administrative tasks.
Proxmox Datacenter Manager Alpha enables to view the basic resource usage of all nodes and their guests. Further, it allows for basic management of resources, including shutdown, reboot, start, etc., and facilitates remote migration of virtual guests between different Datacenters. To do more complex management, the tool directly links to the desired node and/or cluster in the full web interface of Proxmox VE.
This newest open-source project from Proxmox is fully developed in the Rust programming language and comes with a completely redesigned front end, offering a modern web user interface experience. The new design is not only visually appealing and functional, but also optimised for accessibility, speed, and compatibility.

Enhancements in Proxmox Backup Server 3.3
New "push" direction for sync jobs: Sync jobs let users create offsite backups by syncing datastore contents between onsite and offsite Proxmox Backup Servers. Previously, the offsite server had to "pull" backup snapshots from the onsite server. Now, with the new "push" option, the onsite server can send backups to the offsite server, even if the offsite server can't initiate the network connection.
Support for removable datastores: Proxmox Backup Server stores backup snapshots in so-called datastores, and multiple datastores can be configured as needed. With this version, it is now possible to create datastores on removable storage media. Such a "removable datastore" can be used across multiple servers. Using the web interface or the command line, the storage medium can be removed by unmounting the "removable datastore." The datastore can then be re-added by remounting it—either on the same Proxmox Backup Server instance or a different one.
Webhook target for the notification system: The flexible notification system in Proxmox solutions uses a matcher-based approach to route notifications to various target types, allowing for granular control over when, where, and how notifications are sent. The new webhook notification target enables users to trigger HTTP requests for events like sync jobs, backup verification, or garbage collection. It supports customizable request headers and body content, allowing for seamless integration with any webhook-compatible service.
Faster host and container backups: When backing up host filesystems or containers from Proxmox VE to Proxmox Backup Server, it is now possible to efficiently detect files that have not changed since the last backup snapshot. When possible, unchanged files are not processed, which can make file-based backups complete faster.

Backup Fleecing: When creating a backup of a running VM, a slow backup target can negatively impact guest IO performance during the backup process. Fleecing can reduce this impact by caching data blocks in a fleecing image rather than sending it directly to the backup target, which can help guest IO performance and even prevent hangs at the cost of requiring more storage space. Backup fleecing is especially beneficial when backing up IO-heavy guests to a remote Proxmox Backup Server or other backup storage with a slow network connection.
Firewall modernization with nftables (technology preview): Proxmox VE comes with a new firewall implementation that uses nftables instead of iptables. The opt-in feature in tech preview is written in the Rust programming language. Although the new implementation is close to feature parity with the existing one, the nftables firewall must be enabled manually and remains a preview to first gather feedback from the community.

The Ceph source code is packaged by the Proxmox development team and—after extensive tests—delivered in the stable Enterprise repository. Authentication realm sync jobs: The synchronization of users and groups for LDAP-based realms (LDAP & Microsoft Active Directory), can now be configured to run automatically at regular intervals. This simplifies management, and removes a source for configuration errors and omissions compared to synchronizing the realm manually.
Network resources defined for Software-defined Networking (SDN) are now also available as objects in the access control subsystem (ACL) of Proxmox VE. It is possible to grant fine-grained permissions for host network bridges and VNets to specific users and groups.
Resource mappings: Mappings between resources, such as PCI(e) or USB devices, and nodes in a Proxmox VE cluster, can now be created and managed in the API and the web interface. VM guests can get such an abstract resource assigned, which can be matched with concrete resources on each node. This enables offline migrations for VMs with passed-through devices. The mappings are also represented in the ACL system of Proxmox VE, allowing a user to be granted access to one or more specific devices, without requiring root access. In case a conflicting entry is detected, e.g. due to address changes or overlaps, users are informed on VM start.
Secure lockout for Two-factor authentication/TOTP: To further improve security, user accounts with too many login attempts - failing the second factor authentication - are locked out. This protects against attacks where the user password is obtained and a brute-force guess is attempted on the second factor. If TFA fails too many times in a row, the user account is locked out for one hour. If TOTP failed too many times in a row, TOTP is disabled for the user account. The user account can be unlocked again with a recovery key, or manually by an administrator.

Dark Mode: The fully integrated theme “Proxmox Dark” is available for the web interface. Added LDAP authentication realm and user synchronization: This version now allows user authentication against an external LDAP server. In order to be able to log in, users in LDAP realms must be added manually. Alternatively, users can be synced automatically from the LDAP server. In the web interface the dialog Add User has a realm field, making it possible to manually add users to an LDAP or OpenID Connect realm.
WORM tapes: Initial support for WORM (write once, read many) tapes is available with version 2.4. With the special WORM cartridges, data can only be written to the memory once; subsequent changes are not possible. WORM compliant storage is often a requirement for organizations with legal regulations. In addition, it serves, for example, to protect against the accidental or intentional deletion of critical data. Proxmox Backup Server makes no distinction between normal and WORM tapes, so different naming schemes and dedicated media pools are recommended.

Highlights in Proxmox Virtual Environment 7.3
Technology preview: Initial support for a Cluster Resource Scheduler (CRS): In cases when the Proxmox HA Manager needs to find a new host node for a HA service (e.g. recovery, shutdown-policy, HA group configuration changes), it previously used to only count the number of active HA services for load balancing. This version integrates the TOPSIS (Technique for Order of Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution) method, a multi-criteria decision making analysis, for finding the best alternative target node.
When the new scheduler mode "Static Load" is applied, the TOPSIS tool uses the "total memory" and "vCPU" properties of the HA resource to guide the decision on which node in the cluster a HA resource is started on. With this CRS foundation established, the Proxmox developers plan to extend it in future releases with a dynamic load scheduler and live load balancing.
Proxmox Offline Mirror: The Proxmox Offline Mirror tool allows to keep Proxmox VE nodes – with restricted or without access to the public internet – up-to-date and running. With the ‘proxmox-offline-mirror’ utility it’s possible to manage a local apt mirror for all package updates for Proxmox and Debian projects. From that mirror, users can create an external medium (USB flash drive or a local network share), and can then update their policy-restricted or air-gapped systems. For subscribers with a Premium and Standard subscription level, Proxmox offers an offline subscription key for its product portfolio.
Support for Ceph Quincy and Ceph Pacific: Proxmox Virtual Environment 7.3 supports Ceph Quincy 17.2.5 as default and Ceph Pacific 16.2.10. The preferred Ceph version can be selected during the installation process. The Proxmox developers have added heuristical checks to see if it is safe to stop or remove a service instance (MON, MDS, OSD). If removing or stopping a service would affect the cluster operation, the web interface will now alert users with a warning. Overall, the usability for creating new clusters, including selecting the network and checking duplicate IP, has been improved.
Tags for virtual guests: With the option of tagging virtual guests in the web interface, administrators can gain even better overview and simplify management tasks, for example by differentiating between ‘production’ and ‘testing’ VMs. Tags can either be user-modifiable, or restricted to higher-privileged administrator accounts. Tagging has been already available in the configuration (CLI, API), providing users with a possibility for automatization.
Further notable enhancements
ZFS dRAID pools: This version comes with support for creating ZFS dRAID pools in the web interface. Declustered RAID (dRAID) – a feature added in OpenZFS 2.1.0 – is a software raid implementation improving disk recovery time in large storage arrays. If a disk drive fails, the hot spare drive(s) participating in the RAID are used for rebuilding. As its layout is more complex than RAIDz, dRAID is an option for large storage arrays.
Virtual Machines:
CPU pinning: With the taskset command, a VM can be bind to a certain or a range of CPU core(s). CPU affinity can help optimize cache performance, for example in multiprocessing computers.
USB devices have been reworked and can now be hot-plugged; also it’s possible to pass through up to 14 USB devices (previous: five) to a virtual machine.
Proxmox VE Mobile App: The Proxmox VE Android app is based on Flutter 3.0, and allows users to access the Proxmox VE server(s), and manage cluster, nodes, VMs, and containers. The app now supports and targets Android 13. Also feedback about running backup tasks is available.

What’s new in Proxmox Backup Server 2.2
“Namespace” feature to significantly improve backup management of multiple sources on-premises, remotely, and in the cloud: Proxmox Backup Server stores backup data (that is: backup snapshots and their referenced chunks) in datastores, and multiple datastores can be configured. The deduplication of data, which helps improve storage utilization, is based on reusing chunks, which are referenced by the indexes in a backup snapshot. This means that multiple indexes can reference the same chunks (even across backup snapshots), reducing the amount of space needed to contain the data.
To help neatly organize backups and minimize the required storage space, Proxmox Backup Server 2.2 introduces namespaces. Backups from multiple sites (local and remote) or Proxmox VE setups can now be organized into namespaces within a single datastore. This allows for optimal use of deduplication, as this technique is only applied at the datastore level, and reduces the maintenance burden of managing multiple datastores.
With namespaces, businesses can safely back up from different sources to one (physical) datastore, with more fine-grained access control and without having naming conflicts. The "namespace" feature allows sharing a single datastore, including the chunk store, across multiple backup ID namespaces (e.g., one per Proxmox VE cluster).
Maintenance Mode with Active Operations Tracking: To enable administrators to safely execute maintenance tasks on a datastore, the newly implemented “read-only” and “offline” maintenance modes were added. Additionally, by tracking active operations, Proxmox Backup Server can check for currently conflicting access operations, for example a previously started backup restore task, and await their completion before entering maintenance mode, while simultaneously blocking new incoming operations.
Performance and Back-End Improvements: General improvements in the back-end help to drastically reduce memory usage during backup. By extensively analyzing the behavior of the system allocator, and then optimizing the interaction between the allocator and Proxmox Backup Server, for example, the memory footprint has been reduced significantly. Additionally, with version 2.2, it is now possible to do a dry-run of a desired backup via the command line, to view what will happen.
Improved File Restore: To confidently restore data and get back to business quickly, this version includes enhanced file restore. Proxmox Backup Server adds support for downloading Zstandard-compressed tar archives. Compared to the already included zip format, tar archives support more file types (for example, hard links and device nodes), and zstd allows for fast and efficient compression. To improve the handling of non-ASCII code point extraction under Windows, the language encoding flag is added to files when creating a zip archive, if the entry is valid UTF-8. Additionally, ZFS pools get mounted only on demand, and the automatic pre-mounting of ZFS pools is avoided to prevent the upfront time-cost.
New GUI enhancements greatly improve productivity: With the included web interface, backup administrators can effectively reduce work hours. To simplify management, this version now brings the ‘group-filter’ to the GUI. The "Add" and "Edit" windows of the sync jobs and tape-backup jobs panels have an added tab for the filter option. Users can specify in the GUI if they want to process only a specific backup type (ct, vm, host), a specific group, or a regex that matches the group-ID for such a job. The node configuration file now supports multi-line comments and has a Markdown-aware panel for recording structured notes. Some translations have been updated including Arabic, French, German, Japanese, Polish, and Turkish.

What’s new in Proxmox Virtual Environment 7.2
Backup/Restore:
Notes templates: Meta-information can be added via a notes-template for backup jobs, to better distinguish and search for backups. This template is evaluated as soon as the job is executed, and added to any resulting backup. Notes templates can contain template variables like {{guestname}} or {{cluster}}.
To benefit from the Rust code of Proxmox Backup Server, the Proxmox developers make use of perlmod, a Rust crate which allows exporting Rust modules as Perl packages. perlmod is used by Proxmox to transfer data between Rust and Perl, thus implementing parts of Proxmox VE and Proxmox Mail Gateway in Rust.
The next-event scheduling code was updated via this Perl-to-Rust-binding (perlmod) and now uses the same code as Proxmox Backup Server. Users can not only specify the existing weekday, time, and time range, but now also a specific date and time (e.g., *-12-31 23:50; New Year's Eve, 10 minutes before midnight every year), date ranges (e.g., Sat *-1..7 15:00; first Saturday every month at 15:00), or repeating ranges (e.g., Sat *-1..7 */30; first Saturday every month, every half hour).
Some basic restore settings, for example guest name or memory, can now be overwritten in the enhanced backup-restore dialog in the web interface.
A new ‘job-init’ hook step was added to the backup process. Among other things, it can be used to prepare the backup storage, for example, by starting the storage server.
High Availability Manager:
By improving the local resource manager (pve-ha-lrm) scheduler which launches workers, the amount of configurable services that can be handled per single node has increased. This helps in large deployments, as the services at the end of the queue are also checked to ensure that they are still in the target state.
By introducing a skip-round command to the integrated HA simulator in Proxmox VE, it has become easier to test races in scheduling (on the different nodes).
Cluster: Regarding the creation of new VMs or containers, version 7.2 allows you to configure a desired range from which the new VMIDs are proposed via the web interface. The lower and upper boundaries can be set in the Datacenter -> Options panel. Setting lower equal to upper disables auto-suggestion completely, meaning the administrator has to manually enter an ID.
Ceph: Proxmox VE supports Ceph Pacific 16.2.7 and Ceph Octopus 15.2.16 (with continued support until mid 2022). This version now also supports creating and destroying erasure-coded pools, which can be added as Proxmox VE storage entries, and help to reduce the amount of disk space required. A new option in the GUI allows for passing the keyring secrets of external Ceph clusters when adding an RBD or CephFS storage to Proxmox VE.
Web interface: Further enhancements in the web interface allow for example for safe reassignment of a VM disk or CT volume to another guest on the same node; the reassigned disk/volume can be attached at a different bus/mountpoint on the destination guest. This can help in cases of upgrades, restructuring, or after disaster recovery.
Management: Many improvements in Proxmox VE 7.2 enable even more convenient management of the system. For example, a particular kernel version can be selected to boot persistently from a running system, through ‘proxmox-boot-tool kernel pin’. The selection can be used either indefinitely or just for the next boot. This eliminates the need to watch the boot process to select the desired kernel version in the bootloader screen.
Further enhancements and bug fixes
In the installation ISO, ZFS installs can be configured to use various compression algorithms (e.g., zstd, gzip, etc.).Additionally, the memtest86+ package, a tool aimed at memory failure detection, has been updated to the completely rewritten 6.0b.
Further improvements have been added to virtual machines (KVM/QEMU); one to highlight is support for the accelerated virtio-gl (VirGL) display driver. For VirtIO and VirGL display types, SPICE is enabled by default. In modern Linux distributions, changing the graphics card to VirGL can significantly increase frames per second (FPS). For Proxmox containers (LXC), many templates have also been refreshed or newly added, such as the NixOS container template.
The Proxmox VE Android app now provides a simple dark theme and enables it if the system settings are configured to use dark designs. The mobile app also provides an inline console by relaying noVNC for VMs, and xterm.js for containers and the Proxmox VE node shell in the GUI.
To prevent a network outage during the transition from ifupdown to ifupdown2, the ifupdown package was modified to not stop networking upon its removal.

What’s new in Version 7.1
Proxmox ships the latest upstream release of Apache SpamAssassin 3.4.6 with an updated rule-set for its Mail Gateway. PostgreSQL 13.5 is also included.
This release brings enhancements to the API. Support for IP configuration via DHCP has been added. While email still needs working DNS records, users can now manage and configure the IP for Proxmox Mail Gateway in the DHCP configuration. When adding a new entry to a ‘Who’ object, a duplicate check is performed before saving. Proxmox Mail Gateway uses the first search domain from /etc/resolv.conf as domain name - Version 7.1 can now also handle entries in domain names that have a trailing dot. Finally, support for delivery status notifications (DSN, RFC 3461) has been made available in before-queue filtering mode and improved for after-queue filtering.
Improved web interface: The configuration of LDAP backends via GUI has been improved. Changes can now be applied without specifying a password. Furthermore, the APT repository configuration, which was restricted to 'root', is now visible and editable by all users with 'Administrator' privileges. Some translations have been updated including Arabic, Basque, Brazilian Portuguese, French, German, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, and Turkish.
Multi-Factor Authentication for the GUI: Multiple second factors can now be configured for a single account. Web Authentication (WebAuthn), the general standard for authentication, one-time recovery keys and Time-based OATH (TOTP) are all available as second factors.

What's new in Proxmox Backup Server 2.1
Improvements in Backup Management:
This version includes support for setting flexible traffic-control bandwidth limits. It enables the limiting of incoming (for example, backup) and outgoing (for example, restore) traffic from a set of networks. Users can now configure traffic control rules and set the limits to only apply during specific time-frames.
Protected backups: Backups can now be marked as “protected”, which will prevent them from being pruned or manually removed, without first removing the protected flag.
‘group-filter’ for sync jobs and tape-backup jobs: For each backup job, multiple, cumulative filters can be applied: Users can specify if they want to process only a specific backup type (ct, vm, host), a specific group, or a regex that matches the group-ID for such a job.
Improved Round-Robin Database (RRD): The RRD system has been optimized. It allows for storing and displaying time-series data. A much higher resolution in the dashboard is now possible with the following intervals; per-day: 1 min / per-month: 30 min / per-year: 6h / per-decade: 1 week. In total, data can be retained for 10 years. The database uses a journal, in order to avoid data loss.
Improved Support for OpenID Connect (OIDC): This version brings improved support for the open protocol standard OpenID Connect, which provides Single Sign-On (SSO). The improved OIDC integration in Proxmox Backup Server supports configuring an arbitrary username claim. The requested scopes for user information requests can now also be set, however, the default settings remain the same (‘profile’ and ‘email’). The prompt behavior, which was previously hard-coded to ‘login’, is now unset and can be configured to the variants defined in the OIDC specification or an arbitrary extension.

VIENNA, Austria – November 17, 2021 – Enterprise software developer Proxmox Server Solutions GmbH (henceforth "Proxmox") has released version 7.1 of its server virtualization management platform, Proxmox Virtual Environment today. The new version is based on Debian Bullseye 11.1, but using a newer Linux kernel 5.13, and includes updates to the latest versions of leading open-source technologies for virtual environments, such as QEMU 6.1, LXC 4.0, Ceph Pacific 16.2.6, and ZFS 2.1.
Proxmox Virtual Environment 7.1 comes with several new features: support for Windows 11 including TPM, enhanced creation wizard for VM/container, ability to set backup retention policies per backup job in the GUI, a new scheduler daemon supporting more flexible schedules, many improvements for management tasks in the web interface, and notable bug fixes.
What’s new in Proxmox Virtual Environment 7.1
Set backup retention per backup job via GUI: This allows users to set up smart backup policies for each backup job not only from the API and CLI, but also from the web interface.
Advanced scheduling options for backup jobs: Backup jobs in Proxmox VE are now run by a new scheduler daemon, called pvescheduler, which supports more flexible schedule options. This is already known from the verify and garbage collection jobs in Proxmox Backup Server (which in turn are inspired by systemd-timers). Additionally, backups can be marked as protected, which will prevent them from being pruned or manually removed, without first removing the protected flag.
For virtual machines, this version includes support for adding the Trusted Platform Module (TPM) 2.0 to any VM. Among other things, this allows users to install and run Windows 11. A TPM can be added easily via a checkbox in the web interface. Additionally, the UEFI secure boot functionality is now built in and enabled in the underlying QEMU package; the updated installation wizard allows you to select TPM v2.0 and UEFI. Newly created VMs have support for secure boot verification, with an option to have Linux distribution and Microsoft keys pre-enrolled.
Containers in Proxmox VE 7.1 now support Fedora 35 and Ubuntu 21.10 as well as AlmaLinux and Rocky Linux distributions, including templates. Container templates can be compressed with the open-source, lossless compression algorithm Zstandard (Zstd). For new, unprivileged containers created via the web interface, the nesting feature is enabled by default. This ensures better interoperability with modern systemd versions used in newer templates.
Two-factor authentication (TFA) has been further improved. To improve access control, multiple 2nd factors can be configured for a single account. WebAuthn (superseding U2F) and one-time recovery keys have been added. This can all be configured from the web interface.
Other notable enhancements
Creating virtual guests with multiple disks has been simplified. Additional disks can now be added from the creation wizard, eliminating the need to add them after creating the VM or container.
SCSI and Virtio VM disks can be marked read-only.
Ceph: Multiple CephFS instances are supported in Proxmox VE 7.1. The configuration of external Ceph clusters via API is now fully supported.

API: For improved security, the API proxy daemon can now be restricted to listening on one particular IP through the LISTEN_IP parameter. This enables secure configurations, for example, making it accessible on localhost and accessing it through a VPN only, or preventing it from listening on IPv6, by simply configuring the IPv4 wildcard as LISTEN_IP.
Improved Proxmox Installer: The Proxmox installer environment now has improved ISO detection, and can automatically detect HiDPI screens and increase console font and GUI scaling accordingly.

Proxmox Mail Gateway is released under the GNU Affero GPL, v3 and is available as an ISO, which can be installed on bare metal, or a VM. What's new in Proxmox Backup Server 2.0
Proxmox Tape Backup: Proxmox tape backup, which was released as a technology preview in Proxmox Backup Server 1.1, is now stable, providing an easy way to copy datastore content to tapes. Digital magnetic tape makes sense in any effective enterprise backup plan, especially for archiving large amounts of data. Proxmox Backup Server supports Linear Tape-Open generation 5 (LTO-5) or later drives (with best-effort support for LTO-4), including support for hardware encryption. The user space tape driver and support for autoloaders (pmtx) are also written in Rust.
Support for the open protocol standard OpenID Connect, providing Single Sign-On (SSO). It is possible to integrate external authorization servers, either using existing public services or your own identity and access management solution, for example, Keycloak or LemonLDAP::NG.
HTTP Proxy: Support for setting a HTTP Proxy for package updates and subscription check requests has been added.
Full integration of Let's Encrypt/ACME in the back and front end, with stand-alone and DNS plugins available. This enables administrators to easily create and deploy valid and trusted certificates for their domains with the Let's Encrypt certificate authority.
Management of APT repositories via GUI: The new 'Repositories' panel shows an in-depth status report, as well as a list of all configured repositories.
